Bars and Happy Hour in Bellaire

Bellaire is a city of homes, and its drinking life is correspondingly domestic. Only two places inside the city line are listed as bars, a wine bar and a speakeasy, and both are on Bissonnet Street. Everything else is a restaurant with a good reason to be open at five o'clock, which is how most of the happy hours below come about. The larger bars start just across the city line.

Wine and a speakeasy on Bissonnet

Paul's Wine Pix, at 5424 Bissonnet St., is a family-owned wine bar and bottle shop, and its website says the room is for guests 21 and older. It mentions a food menu, gift cards and a retail wine section. The bar lists hours from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, until 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed on Mondays.

Rossa Room Speakeasy, at 4564 Bissonnet St., is listed as a speakeasy. Its website is built around a wine-themed page with an Enter link and reservations through OpenTable. The room lists hours from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and it is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Enoteca Rossa, at 4566 Bissonnet St., is the Italian restaurant and wine bar next door by street number. Its website describes an extensive wine list and curated wines during happy hour, alongside hand-made pasta and wood-fired pizza. It lists hours from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on most days, until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and it is closed on Mondays.

A beer wall

Lankford's - Bellaire, at 5208 Bissonnet St., is a family-owned burger restaurant, now in its third generation of family ownership, and its website lists milkshakes beside the burgers. At Lankford's the draw is a self-pour wall of 20 Texas craft beers, priced by the ounce, inside a burger restaurant its website says dates to 1937. The restaurant lists hours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and until 9 p.m. from Wednesday to Friday, with a 9 a.m. Saturday start.

The restaurant happy hours

Bellaire's bars are mostly restaurants and wine rooms, which suits a city of homes. The happy hour here is an early-evening habit, and the restaurants that list one on their websites are worth knowing by name. Check each one's own page for the current times and prices, because both change.

Betsy's, at 4400 Bellaire Blvd., is the cafe inside Evelyn's Park, and its website lists a weekday happy hour. It describes shared plates, sandwiches, burgers and salad bowls in the evening. Betsy's posts hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Candente, at 5101 Bellaire Blvd., lists a weekday happy hour and a menu of margaritas that runs from house to ultra-premium, with frozen margaritas, mezcal cocktails, palomas, sangrias and tequila flights. The Tex-Mex restaurant lists hours until 9 p.m. every day.

Cafe Piquet, at 5757 Bissonnet St., is a family-owned Cuban restaurant with a spacious outdoor patio and a weekday happy hour on its website, with sangria and mojitos on the menu. It lists hours until 8 p.m. from Tuesday to Thursday and until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The '401, at 6700 Ferris St., calls itself a table and tap, with daily specials and a happy hour listed on its website. It posts hours from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on most weekdays and to 10 p.m. on Friday.

Jax Grill, at 6510 S Rice Ave, is a counter-service grill with a live-fire mesquite grill and a scratch kitchen, and its website lists Jax Margaritas alongside the half-pound Jax Burger. It lists hours until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

CASA Bar & Grill, at 5711 Bissonnet St., describes kosher fine dining with a cocktail program built on fresh juices, premium liquors and house bitters. The restaurant posts hours from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday, and it is closed on Friday and Saturday.

The pattern is easy to see in the hours. Most restaurant bars here close around 9 p.m. or 10 p.m., so the late end of a Bellaire evening belongs to the Rossa Room Speakeasy, which lists an 11 p.m. close on Friday and Saturday, and to the bars beyond the city line.

Just outside the line

Three more places sit a short drive away, in Houston, and round out the list.

Little Woodrow's Bellaire, at 4235 Bellaire Blvd., is a backyard bar that calls itself a Southwest Houston staple, with a patio bar, more than a dozen televisions, yard games and a private room. Its website says the bar is for guests 21 and older and lists a weekday happy hour. The bar lists hours until 2 a.m. every night.

Bongo's Sports Bar and Cafe, at 6253 Bissonnet St., is a sports bar and cafe that keeps a long day: its listing posts hours from 6 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. every day of the week.

Cache Cocktail Bar, at 5160 Hidalgo St., is an upscale cocktail and wine bar at Hotel Vesper in Uptown, serving French-inspired craft cocktails and light bites, and its website lists a daily happy hour. The bar lists hours from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. every day.
