Coffee and Bakeries in Bellaire

Bellaire is a city of homes with a short, useful list of places to buy a coffee and something to go with it. It is a small city of 17,202 people, so nothing is far from anything else, and most of the list sits on two streets, Bissonnet Street and Bellaire Boulevard. Almost all of it opens early.

Breakfast and a cup of coffee

Bellaire Coffee Shop, at 5422 Bissonnet St., has a name that promises nothing more than it delivers, and it posts a 6 a.m. opening on weekdays with a 2 p.m. close. The listing starts weekend hours an hour later, at 7 a.m. If you want the day to begin before the rest of the street wakes up, start here.

Cedar St. Cafe, at 215 N. 5th St., is the place for a Mexican breakfast: chilaquiles, migas, breakfast tacos and burritos, with aguas frescas and fresh-squeezed orange juice to drink. Community Impact, the local news outlet, reported in 2023 that owner Ana Soria opened it in September 2021 in memory of her mother. The cafe lists hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and from 8 a.m. on Sundays.

Coffee Fellows, at 4900 Bissonnet St., is the conventional coffeehouse of the group. Its website lists lattes, cold brew and matcha, plus overnight oats, yogurt parfaits, breakfast sandwiches and lunch sandwiches on bagels, focaccia, croissants or brioche. It posts a 6 a.m. weekday opening and closes at 7 p.m. or 8 p.m.

Dandelion Cafe Bellaire, at 5405 Bellaire Blvd., does breakfast and lunch, with French toast, waffles, pancakes, eggs and tostadas, chilaquiles, chicken and waffles, smoothies, mimosas and made-to-order coffee. It lists hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., a little later on Friday and Saturday.

Tea, cakes and donuts

McHugh Tea Room & Gifts, at 5305 Bissonnet St., serves organic tea in large pots, and its website describes bottomless tea chosen from more than 60 organic varieties, with tea sandwiches, scones and mini desserts. Afternoon tea requires a reservation, and a casual lunch is also on offer. The shop lists hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Tuesdays.

Frullino, at 6300 W Loop S Ste 130, is a bakery and coffee shop that says it specializes in custom cakes for weddings, birthdays and other occasions. It posts weekday hours from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., a short Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and is closed on Sunday.

Donuts are well covered. Shipley Do-Nuts, at 4501 Bissonnet St., lists a 5 a.m. opening every day of the week. Fresh & Best Donuts, at 5214 Bellaire Blvd., also lists 5 a.m., but it closes at 2 p.m. and stays shut on Mondays.

Just over the line

A Bellaire morning tends to cross the city line, because several of the bakeries people drive for have Houston or Southside Place addresses rather than Bellaire ones.

Leven Bakery & Cafe, at 4191 Bellaire Blvd., describes itself as a gluten-free bakery and cafe with all-day meals, which is worth knowing if someone in your group cannot eat wheat. It lists hours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Moeller's Bakery, at 4201 Bellaire Blvd. in Southside Place, calls itself Houston's oldest family owned and operated bakery and says it has been serving sweets since 1930. It sells pastries, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, petit fours, pies, breads and rolls. The shop posts weekday hours from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday hours from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is closed on Sunday.

Kolache Factory, at 4001 Bellaire Blvd., makes kolaches by hand in savory and sweet versions, among them sausage, egg and cheese and bacon, egg and cheese, along with cinnamon rolls, muffins and espresso drinks. It lists hours from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Three Brothers Bakery, at 4036 S Braeswood Blvd., describes itself as a full-service bakery that makes baked goods and treats to order. It posts hours from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. most days and closes at 5 p.m. on Sundays. A few numbers down the same street, CoffeeTrend, at 4042 S Braeswood Blvd., serves espresso drinks, smoothies, pastries and breakfast tacos, plus beer, wine and cocktails, on a pet-friendly patio beside the bayou trail. It lists hours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.

If you only have time for one stop, pick by what you want to carry home: kolaches from Kolache Factory, a cake or a box of cookies from Moeller's Bakery, or something gluten-free from Leven Bakery & Cafe. All three have addresses between 4001 and 4201 Bellaire Boulevard, so one trip can cover all of them.

West on Bellaire Boulevard

Bellaire Boulevard keeps going west, and well beyond the city it becomes the main street of Houston's Asiatown, where the bakeries follow a different playbook. The two below are the easiest places to start.

Paris Baguette, at 9110 Bellaire Blvd. Ste C, sells cakes, pastries and breads and pours Lavazza coffee. It lists hours from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

TOUS les JOURS Bakery Café - Bellaire, at 9896 Bellaire Blvd., calls its bakery items French-Asian inspired and lists breads, cakes, pastries and breakfast sandwiches, with coffee, smoothies and tea. It posts hours from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, which makes it a bakery you can visit after dinner.

Before you go

- Closed days vary, so check before you drive: Fresh & Best Donuts is closed on Mondays, McHugh Tea Room & Gifts is closed on Tuesdays, and Frullino and Moeller's Bakery are closed on Sundays. - Book ahead if you want afternoon tea at McHugh Tea Room & Gifts, because its website says afternoon tea requires a reservation. - Several addresses here are Houston or Southside Place addresses, not Bellaire ones, and the Bellaire Boulevard bakeries in the last section are well west of the city, so plan a real drive. - Hours come from business listings and change without notice, so confirm with the shop or its own page before you go.
