Braeswood Place
Brays Bayou runs through Braeswood Place, and the neighborhoods along it remember its worst days: Tropical Storm Allison in 2001, the floods of 2015, Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Any honest description of the place starts with the water. Braeswood Place is a mostly single-family Houston neighborhood inside Loop 610.

Where, and what
Braeswood Place is a mostly single-family Houston neighborhood inside Loop 610. It lies east of Bellaire, south of West University Place and Southside Place, and west of the Texas Medical Center and Old Braeswood, the older neighborhood developed in the 1920s with a Hare and Hare landscape design of winding streets and a countryside feel. Braeswood Place came later; the city describes it as a group of comfortable subdivisions developed after World War II.
The name covers two maps. The neighborhood itself counts about 2,200 homes in seven subdivisions, among them Ayrshire, Braes Heights and Braes Terrace. The City of Houston's Super Neighborhood 32, called Braeswood, is larger, taking in Linkwood, Knollwood Village, Woodshire and Woodside as well, and had 21,835 residents in 2015.
The bayou
The bayou that tested this neighborhood is also the reason so much has been spent to protect it. Project Brays, a $480 million partnership between the Harris County Flood Control District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was celebrated as complete on May 26, 2022, after more than 30 years of work.
It brought channel improvements along 21 miles of the bayou and four stormwater detention basins covering more than 800 acres and holding about 3.5 billion gallons. The first basin, at Arthur Storey Park, was excavated starting in 1993; the last, Willow Waterhole, was finished in 2018. The flood control district says the project reduced flood risk for more than 15,000 structures in the watershed.
Bellaire has a stake in that water. Cypress Ditch flows east from Bellaire toward Brays Bayou, and Bellaire's mayor, Gus Pappas, has said that when the bayou backs up, it backs up right into the city.
Karl Young Park, a City of Houston park at 7800 Stella Link, has courts and fields, and Linkwood Park, at 3699 Norris, is the listed meeting place of the Braeswood Super Neighborhood Council. The Weekley Family YMCA, at 7101 Stella Link, serves Braeswood Place and Meyerland. The super neighborhood sits in City Council districts C and K, and the city's profile notes upscale new construction spreading across many of its subdivisions.
Next door
Schools and city lines tie the neighborhood to Bellaire. Pershing Middle School, at 3838 Blue Bonnet, sits in Braeswood Place, and Bellaire High and Lamar High each serve parts of the area, so check any address in Houston ISD's school finder at findaschool.houstonisd.org. Blocks 1 and 2 of Braes Heights Section 1 lie inside the city of Southside Place, a reminder of how closely these communities are stitched together.
The Braeswood Super Neighborhood Council meets on the third Thursday of the month at 6 p.m., except in August and December, and is meeting virtually at this time; contact and current meeting details are on the City of Houston's page at houstontx.gov/superneighborhoods/32.html.
