Short answer: You may not park on a roadway for the principal purpose of storing a vehicle there more than 72 hours. Do not park in front of a driveway, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, or on a sidewalk. The 72-hour storage rule
Sec. 30-94 says no person shall park a vehicle upon any roadway for the principal purpose of "(1) Storing such vehicle for more than 72 hours; (2) Displaying such vehicle for sale; and/or (3) Greasing or repairing such vehicle," except for emergency repairs needed to move it.
Rule: City Code Sec. 30-94.
Driveways, sidewalks and hydrants
The same section bans parking "On a sidewalk," "In front of a public or private driveway" and "Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant." Sec. 30-96 repeats: "No vehicle shall be parked within 15 feet of any fire hydrant." On the listed streets or portions of streets in Sec. 30-100, parking is also unlawful within six feet on either side of a driveway.
Rule: City Code Sec. 30-94, Sec. 30-96, and Sec. 30-100.
Front yards and large vehicles
In residential districts, Sec. 24-515 says no truck exceeding three-fourths ton capacity, bus, recreational vehicle, trailer, boat, motor home or mobile home may be parked or stored on any abutting street or within the front yard. Those vehicles may only be parked behind the rear plane of the primary structure. Sec. 24-516 prohibits parking unattended vehicles on the unsurfaced area between the edge of the curb or paved street surface and the property.
Rule: City Code Sec. 24-515 and Sec. 24-516.
Abandoned vehicles
Chapter 18 defines an abandoned motor vehicle as one that is inoperable and more than five years old and left unattended on public property for more than 48 hours, or one that meets the other tests in that definition. That is a different process from the 72-hour storage rule above.
What happens if you don't
Breaking the zoning parking rules (Sec. 24-515 and Sec. 24-516) can bring a fine of up to $2,000, and each day counts as a new offense (Sec. 1-10). We did not find a separate fine amount in Sec. 30-94, Sec. 30-96, or Sec. 30-100, so the general penalty applies to the street-parking rules: a fine of up to $500, and each day counts as a new offense (Sec. 1-10). The legal basis is Texas Local Government Code Sec. 54.001.
